In Greek mythology, sea sirens were mythical beings, initially depicted as half-woman, half-bird, who lured sailors to their death with enchanting songs. Their most famous appearance is in Homer's Odyssey, where Odysseus and his crew safely navigate past them by binding Odysseus to the ship's mast and plugging his crew's ears with wax. Over time, particularly in the Middle Ages, their image evolved from these bird-like creatures to the modern concept of mermaids, though their core characteristic remained their dangerous, alluring song associated with the sea.
